Abstract
In this paper an attempt is made to distinguish between Cognition and Learning styles. Cognitive style is usually described as a stable and persistent personality dimension which influences attitudes, values, and social interaction while learning styles vary as it describes a person’s typical mode of thinking, remembering or solving a task. There are different kinds of learners as serialists who learn language through a Surface Approach, holists who learn it as a whole through a Deep Approach and ‘versatiles’ who adopt different strategies to solve different tasks. The traditional approaches and syllabuses focus on learning language in sequence and thereby benefit serialists learners while the participatory approaches and holist syllabuses focus on language as a whole and benefit the holists kind of learners.
