IMPROVING QUALITY OF SECONDARY TEACHER EDUCATION: WHY AND HOW? By Dr. Darshana Sharma[1]

Abstract

Teacher is the topmost academic and professional person in the educational system of the country under whose charge the destiny of children is placed by parents and society. No amount of investment in improving the physical and educational facilities can improve education unless there are adequate numbers of qualified teachers who can implement the educational process to bring desired educational development of students. Quality of teachers depends, to a large extent, on the quality of teacher education. The quality of teacher education programmes presently being offered by teacher education institutions in our country is far from satisfactory. Describing some problem areas in secondary teacher education programme, the paper also aims to suggest how its quality can be improved.
