EDUCATIONAL ADJUSTMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN RELATION TO TYPE OF SCHOOL, GENDER, SOCIAL CATEGORY AND FAMILY TYPE By Rajesh Kumar Sharma

Abstract

Psychologists have interpreted adjustment from two important points of view i.e. adjustment as an achievement and other, adjustment as a process. The first point of view emphasizes the quality or efficiency of adjustment and second lays emphasis on the process by which an individual marks adjustment in his external environment. It is well known fact that the life of human beings was simple and their needs were limited which were satisfied in their immediate environment in Stone Age. However, as the human beings became conscious about the things in their environment, their needs increased and with the increased needs, the problem of the adjustment arose in society. This study is an attempt to know the educational adjustment of high school students in relation to type of school, gender, social category and family type. In order to study the problem, the survey method was used to collect the data. The data was collected with convenient sampling technique. The sample for the present study was comprised of 100 secondary school students of Shimla district. Educational Adjustment Inventory by Rani & Singh (2008) was used to know the educational adjustment of high school students. In order to study the level of educational adjustment of high school students, descriptive statistics like Mean, Mode, Median, Standard Deviation (S.D), Kurtosis and Skewness were computed. Further, for studying the differences in educational adjustment of high school students with respect to type of school, gender, social category and family type, t-test was employed. The findings revealed that secondary school students possessed moderate level of educational   adjustment. Kendriya Vidyalaya and State Government secondary school students did not differ significantly from each other with respect to their educational adjustment.      Secondary school boys and girls did not differ significantly from each other with respect to their educational adjustment. Secondary school students belonging to general-open category and scheduled caste category did not differ significantly from each other with respect to their educational adjustment. Secondary school students belonging to nuclear and joint type of families did not differ significantly from each other with respect to their educational adjustment.
